Eastern White Pine lumber from Durgin and Crowell is certified under the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) fiber sourcing program.
"SFI® sourcing certification is an example of Durgin and Crowell's environmental commitment, as well as the company's commitment to a long-term, healthy, and repsonsibly managed log supply." - Peter B. Crowell, President, Durgin & Crowell.
With almost 200 million acres certified across North America, the non-profit SFI sustainable forest certification program is one of the largest in the world, with a standard based on principles and measures that promote responsible environmental behavior and sound forest management including measures to protect water quality, biodiversity, wildlife habitat, species at risk and forests of exceptional conservation value.
SFI Inc. stands apart from other certification programs by addressing the fact that 90 percent of the world’s forests are not certified to a credible standard. An SFI sourcing label delivers assurance that the fiber in a product is from a responsible source, even if it comes from forests that are not certified. In North America, program participants must have an auditable procurement process showing that, among other things, they encourage landowners to reforest areas that have been harvested, use best management practices to protect water quality and identify and protect important habitat elements for wildlife. When sourcing fiber from outside of North America, program participants must show they support the principles of sustainable forestry, including efforts to thwart illegal logging and promote conservation of biological diversity.
“The SFI program values the role all forest landowners play in protecting the long-term health and sustainability of our forests,” said SFI Inc. President and CEO Kathy Abusow. “With SFI fiber sourcing certification, Durgin and Crowell joins a growing number of companies that are working with landowners to promote sustainable forestry practices on lands that are not certified, helping to improve forestry practices on millions of additional acres of land.”
About SFI Inc.
SFI Inc. is a 501c(3) non-profit charitable organization, and is solely responsible for maintaining, overseeing and improving the Sustainable Forestry Initiative program (www.sfiprogram.org), which is internationally recognized and among the largest in the world. It is one of the fastest-growing forest certification programs with over 160 million acres (65 million hectares) of SFI-certified forests across North America. The SFI Standard also includes unique fiber sourcing requirements that promote responsible forest management on all suppliers’ lands and a chain-of-custody certification, which can communicate to buyers how much certified fiber is in a specific product. The SFI forest standard is endorsed by the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes, a global umbrella organization that has strict requirements for endorsement. SFI Inc. is governed by a three-chamber board of directors representing environmental, social and economic sectors equally.
