B. Manning
B. Manning is the Sales Manger. He has been with Durgin and Crowell for 30 years. His responsibilities include overseeing all the Company’s sales and marketing functions. B. likes to say that his department is the “link” that ties together the entire operation. He makes sure that everyone has what they need to do a great job. B. calls his fellow workers the best, most talented and dedicated group in the lumber mill industry. He believes that Durgin and Crowell has a vision, and that it is to provide the employees with the tools and the leeway to get the job done. And done right. On those rare occasions when he is not overseeing things at the mill, B. plays competitive tennis, is an Alpine ski official, and is active in his town government, where he heads up both the zoning and finance committees.
Jason ?Spike? Heiser
Jason Heiser is in charge of Sales and Shipping. He has been with Durgin and Crowell for 15 years. His responsibilities include checking inventory, orders, shipments and invoices. Over his 15 years with the Company, Jason has done it all. Knowing all the phases of the lumber business makes him valuable to Durgin and Crowell and to customers. Jason appreciates that Durgin and Crowell has the information technology in place that provides everyone at the Company with a great “look” into everything going on at the mill, enabling everyone to do a better job. Jason feels that being with Durgin and Crowell for 15 years says a lot about the Company as a place to work and about its commitment to please customers. When Jason is not checking on things at the mill, he enjoys snowmobiling and driving his V8 truck. In a “past” life Jason was in a rock & roll band and was a downhill mountain bike racer.
Chuck Gaede
Chuck Gaede is in charge of Sales and operations. He has been with Durgin and Crowell for three years. His responsibilities include forecasting what types of products will be in demand, and scheduling the planer mill to accommodate the specific customer requests. Chuck also interacts with all the other Durgin and Crowell managers to ensure that the mill is running smoothly, so that customers are receiving the lumber they ordered in a timely manner. There are lots of reasons why Chuck enjoys working at Durgin and Crowell. In addition to the people, Chuck appreciates the fact that the Company is forward-thinking and willing to invest in the equipment and technologies that ensure a quality product, and worker safety. In his spare time, Chuck enjoys motor sports, tennis and ice hockey. When he finds the time, this bachelor also likes to travel.
Bob Messer
Bob Messer is in charge of the mill’s 18 dry kilns. He has been with Durgin and Crowell for 29 years. Bob appreciates the fact that the mill has 18 Irving Moore kilns because of their smaller capacity. Being able to dry smaller amounts of lumber gives Durgin and Crowell far more flexibility, which makes it easier for Bob and his fellow employees to meet the many needs of its customers, from the everyday to the unique. Bob feels that Durgin and Crowell provides an environment that believes in and supports hard work, honesty, quality and always trying to improve what they do. When he is not drying lumber to perfection, Bob takes pleasure in spending time with his family – he and his wife have two adopted children – and doing volunteer work with his church and with local youth groups.
Norm Smith
Norm Smith is the Company’s round saw filer. He has been with Durgin & Crowell for 18 years. His chief responsibility is to make sure every round saw blade, from six-tooth to 138-tooth is sharpened properly. To do this, Norm uses the best carbide saw tooth: the DCO8 from Denmark. Durgin and Crowell is the only U.S. mill that uses the DCO8. Norm insists on using them because they last longer. When the blade needs to be re-toothed, Norm carefully grinds six different angles of each tooth and benches the blade to ensure that it runs “true.” Norm says that Durgin and Crowell does it better than any other mill in the country. He also says that Durgin and Crowell gives him the time and the resources to do his job right. When he is not filing saw blades, Norm is snowmobiling and cheering on his younger daughter playing in AAU basketball games.
Tony Durgin
Tony Durgin is the head filer. He has been with Durgin and Crowell for 18 years. Tony oversees the filing of all the Company’s band saws, band mills, as well as its five-band Stenner. He uses “Stellite” tips on his blades to ensure quality. When asked to fill in, Tony runs the sawmill, which helps him get a better sense of how well the saws work after filing them. Tony loves the challenge of his work; it brings him great satisfaction. He says that it is easy to come to work everyday. A point borne out by the fact that after missing one day of work because of being ill 17 years ago, Tony has not taken a sick day since. When he is not honing his trade at the mill, Tony spends time with his wife and their two children. He also loves to build in his workshop. This self-avowed “Yankee Hater” is a rabid Red Sox fan
